There's likely to be little overlap with Model Xs that were recalled in April over a sticky parking brake.
The recall affects any Tesla Model X with fold-flat second row seats that were produced between October 28, 2016, and August 16, 2017, the AP reports.
Electric carmaker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) is recalling 11,000 Model X sport utility vehicles worldwide due to a faulty locking mechanism in their rear seats that raises the risk of the seats falling forward in a crash.
Tesla announced early this month that it missed its production target for the Model 3 sedan, the first mid-priced electric vehicle for the mass market in its lineup. Vehicles that fell under that recall were only built through October. There haven't been any reports of seat issues in the field.
The electric vehicle maker emailed Tesla customers on Thursday regarding the recall, stating that "a small number of cables in the second row fold-flat seats" may need to be adjusted.
The company also said that it can attend to all the needed repairs with its mobile fix service and owners can send their auto to the nearest Tesla Service Centre if they choose to do so. "We just ask that you temporarily avoid having two adults sit in the second row left and center seating positions at the same time".
An improperly adjusted cable could cause the seat back to move in a crash.
"Although Tesla has not received reports of any issues or accidents relating to this condition, we will be conducting a voluntary recall to inspect the affected vehicles and confirm whether any adjustment is needed", the statement said.
