Facebook will help investigators release Russian Federation ads, Sandberg tells Axios

Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg says Congress should 'absolutely' release Russia adverts

Sandberg said Facebook didn't catch these ads earlier because it was focused on other threats, such as hacking.

A top Facebook executive says ads linked to Russian Federation trying to influence the U.S. presidential election should "absolutely" be released to the public, along with information on whom the ads were targeting.

Sandberg's meeting with the caucus was just the latest stop in an apology tour launched after Facebook faced harsh criticism for denying, back tracking, then finally admitting the key role it played in Russia's disinformation campaign.

Facebook has admitted it shouldn't have allowed fake Russian accounts to fund ads supporting Trump in the U.S. election and will do everything in its power to help authorities get to the bottom of the alleged election interference campaign.

United States lawmakers have said they planned to release the ads placed on Facebook once any personal information on users is removed. The lawmaker in question, Rep. James Clyburn, reportedly told Sandberg that Facebook helped President Donald Trump win the 2016 election. But when we say that, we're not saying we don't have a responsibility.

Congressional committees and special counsel Robert Mueller are investigating Russian interference in the election, including whether there was any collusion between Trump associates and Moscow.

Sandberg acknowledged that "things happened on our platform in this election that should not have happened, especially foreign interference". We're angry, we're upset.

In an interview with US-based news website Axios on Thursday, she said, "At our heart we are a tech company".

"None of us should want this kind of foreign interference and in others to prevent it, we are all going to have to fully cooperate with each other, with government, across the board", Sandberg said.

She said the company had been too permissive at times in terms of how advertisers were allowed to target users.

Some 470 accounts spent a total of approximately $100,000 between June 2015 to May 2017 on ads that touted fake or misleading news, according to Facebook.

She criticized Twitter's decision this week to remove a campaign video from Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn, who is running for a U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee.

"In that ad, there are a lot of things that people don't like, that I don't like".

Business Insider said Britain was already considering regulations that would treat Facebook more like a media company. Representatives from Facebook, Google and Twitter are expected to testify about Russian influence at hearings before the Senate and House intelligence committees on November 1.
