Today, scientists are reporting the discovery of a vast ring encircling Haumea, a distant dwarf planet that takes some 284 Earth years to orbit the Sun, and it's the first time we've seen a ring in this category of minor planet.
Haumea, named after a Hawaiian goddess, orbits just past Neptune and has two moons, called Hiʻiaka and Namaka.
The ring was spotted in the pattern of light from the star Haumea occluded, and the Nature paper says the rings are similar to those that surround Uranus and Neptune. She also reiterated that we can intercept supplemental ring associated discoveries in the future.
In that same study, astronomers suggested that other two dwarf planets may also be surrounded by rings.
Because these comparatively miniature bodies are eons away and are hard to perceive them from even the most advanced telescope. But Haumea is a bit different.
It is estimated that the rings could be as wide as 70km and encircles the planet at a distance of around 1,000km from its surface.

Haumea's ring has a radius of almost 1,500 miles, the team discovered, and it moves very slowly in contrast with its host planet. We know the dwarf planet itself reflects about half the sunlight that shines on it, and that it doesn't have an atmosphere.
Astronomers have discovered the first-ever dwarf planet in the Solar System to be surrounded by a ring.
Researchers from 10 different labs observed Haumea with 12 different telescopes across Europe as it passed in front of a star called URAT1 533-182543 - an event astronomers called an occultation. Haumea is now officially known as the third body smaller than Neptune hosting rings. "We didn't expect to find a ring around Haumea, but we were not too surprised either". Unfortunately, the astronomers have no clue, because the way rings form around giant planets don't seem to mirror how a ring formed around Haumea.
Like its neighbor Pluto, Haumea takes a very long and elongated path around the sun and at times crosses the path of other celestial bodies. Ortiz estimates that about a quarter of bodies in the outer solar system might have rings around them, although he stresses that this is still "pure speculation" for now.
