Twitter is field testing a lightweight app in the Philippines

Twitter testing out a Lite Android app in the Philippines
       By Ida Torres

Facebook may have paved the way with the "lite" versions of its various apps, but now other social networks, including Twitter, are getting in on the trend of offering scaled-back apps for users in countries with slow data or unreliable connections.

The app is available on the Google Play Store, however, if you're not browsing from the Philippines, you will most likely not be able to download it from there.

The Twitter Lite app will work in a similar manner as their mobile site under the same moniker - consuming less data and tackling slow networks at the same time. This will help reduce data usage and enable them to access Twitter faster using the app.

The San Francisco-based social media firm now has a user base of 319 million users, which is lower than that of Facebook at 1.9 billion, but announcing support for a Lite version of Twitter might help them boost those numbers.

Twitter Lite is a native app version of the company's mobile website of the same name. The app itself is also suited for phones with less storage, taking up "under 3MB". What features would you like to see in the Twitter lite app? According to the company, the new app will save up to 70% overall data. This will make sure that no images or videos are automatically downloaded.

Iran says its missile program is within the bounds of the resolution because the rockets are not created to carry nuclear weapons. Washington considers Tehran's ballistic missile tests to be a violation of the United Nations resolution that endorsed JCPOA.

Twitter Lite is now in testing phase and is available in the Philippines.

Twitter Lite is built to work with virtually every smartphone and tablets that run on Android 5.0 Lollipop and later versions. It supports English and Filipino languages and can be used on 2G and 3G networks. "The Philippines market has slow mobile networks and expensive data plans, while mobile devices with limited storage are still very popular there".

The mode features all of the same core modes as the standard Twitter app, including the timeline, messages and notifications.

According to Twitter, the application is now in the testing phase and the company has not yet decided whether it wants to release the app to other markets. "Twitter Lite helps to overcome these barriers to use for Twitter in the Philippines".
