Mukul Roy announces resignation from Trinamool Congress

Mukul roy

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress party senior leader Mukul Roy has announced that he has resigned from the party.

He also said that he would reveal his reasons for taking the drastic step after Durga Puja. Roy said he would quit the Upper House after Durga Puja ends on September 30. At a press conference, The Indian Express quoted him as saying on Monday, "I was the one who was the first to sign, when Trinamool Congress was formed on December 17 1997". But Roy did say that he was "forced" to resign and he was leaving the party "with heavy heart and pain". There is also talk of Roy forming an independent party on his own.

Reports of Mukul Roy cosying up to the BJP leadership were believed to have riled Mamata Banerjee and the TMC leadership following which he was removed as the chairman of Parliament's standing committee on transport and tourism.

Roy, one of the founding leaders of the Trinamool Congress, had always been regarded the second-in-command of the party after Mamata Banerjee and the architect of TMC's organisational and electoral success in the state.

Facebook backs off plan for non-voting shares
That would value his holdings at a minimum of US$68.2 billion, based on the company's closing share on Friday of US$170.54. Facebook's decision is "all the relief we asked for", the lawyer was quoted as saying.

Roy was recently removed as the TMC vice-president after the party made a decision to restructure its committee. However, his announcement would lead to an abrupt vacancy in the Rajya Sabha.

Mukul Roy, 63, was once the undisputed number two in the party after Mamata Banerjee.

Completely sidelined in the party for months, speculation about Roy quitting the Trinamool was rife for weeks, as he gradually distanced himself from it, and was said to be scouting for a new political innings with some other party, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was also instrumental in party strategy during the polls, especially in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
