Iran successfully test-fires new ballistic missile

Donald Trump Nikki Haley United Nations

Tehran has presented a new ballistic missile capable, the Tasnim News said citing the head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace division, Amirali Hajizadeh, on Friday.

There has been some sympathy for the U.S. position from France, whose President Emmanuel Macron said the deal could be expanded to ban missile tests and cut a sunset clause in the nuclear agreement that would see Iran resume some uranium enrichment from 2025.

The Khorramshahr was first displayed at a military parade on Friday, where President Hassan Rouhani said Iran would strengthen its missile capabilities.

He also criticised a 2015 pact that the United States and other world powers struck with Iran under which Tehran agreed to restrict its nuclear programme in return for relief from economic sanctions.

"On the path to improve our country's defensive capacity we will certainly not be the least affected by any threats and we won't ask anyone's permission", Brigadier General Amir Hatami said in remarks carried by state television.

Washington has called on Tehran not to get involved in activities linked to nuclear missiles.

Iran Tests New Ballistic Missile Despite US Warning
Iranian officials have argued that the measure only applies to missiles specifically created to carry nuclear warheads. He said his country would "not be the first" to violate the deal, which Mr Trump has threatened to pull out of.

Iran has said repeatedly that it has no choice but to boost its defences as its regional rivals Israel and Saudi Arabia sign huge arms contracts with Washington and other Western governments.

The next major deadline comes in October when Trump will decide whether to certify that Iran is complying with the agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Mr Trump said this week he has reached a decision on the nuclear deal, but hasn't revealed what it is. "Not much of an agreement we have!" he added.

He also said Tehran will keep supporting the "oppressed people of Yemen, Syria and Palestine" - a reference to Iran's role in the wars in Yemen and Syria and its support for Palestinian militant groups such as Hamas.

"Iran's military power lies in its commitment to never invade another country or land".
