Iran Successfully Launches New Ballistic Missile That Can Reach Israel

Rouhani spoke during a military parade on Friday commemorating the 1980s Iran-Iraq war, the Associated Press reported.

"This is the third Iranian missile with a range of 2,000 km", it added.

Just hours earlier, the Khorramshahr missile was unveiled at a large military parade presided over by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who vowed to continue Tehran's missile program in defiance of demands from Washington to halt it.

Trump has repeatedly vowed to pull US backing from the deal; he has also called for including Iran's missile program.

The test firing is likely to fuel tensions with Washington. We will strengthen our missile capabilities. We really do not have an agreement!

"You are seeing images of the successful test of the Khorramshahr ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 km, the latest missile of our country", state television said.

"The missile has become smaller in size (compared to other Iranian ballistic missiles) and more tactical, and it will be operational in the near future", Hajizadeh said without further elaboration.

'All countries in the world supported the nuclear deal in the United Nations General Assembly this year. except the United States and the Zionist regime (Israel),' Rouhani said.

Tehran has argued that the missile is exclusively for defensive purposes and is not a menace for any country in the region.

The broadcaster says the missile is capable of carrying multiple warheads.

President Hassan Rouhani made the statements at a military parade in Tehran in direct defiance of United States demands. The country had previously been known to have a missile of similar range, the Shahab-3, which was based on a North Korean missile.

"Regrettably, since the agreement was confirmed we have seen anything but a more peaceful, stable region and this is a real issue", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters at the United Nations.

"On the other (hand), domestic politics very much drives Iran's relationship with the U.S., and Rouhani has a big hard-line contingency among the country's elite who fear the USA wants a regime change that he has to consider".
