Pacemakers crucial for record-chasing athletes in Berlin

Kimetto broke his compatriot Wilson Kipsang's time of 2:03:23

"That's sport", said Kipchoge, who won the Berlin Marathon in 2015 despite flapping insoles in his shoes.

"The Monza marathon was for me a big success and I got a lot of motivation from that", Kipchoge told reporters on Friday.

It was the veteran Kipchoge who finished first in 2:03:32, 35 seconds off of Dennis Kimmetto's world record of 2:02:57, set at the 2014 Berlin Marathon. "It should not be lost to people that he is the third fastest runner with a time of 2:03:05", Korir reiterated. Adola, in his first marathon, finished second in 2:03:46, the quickest debut time ever.

Mosinet Geremew of Ethiopia was third in 2:06:09.

Two of the favorites to chase the world record did not factor into the race.

All the pre-race hype was about the battle between Kipchoge, Wilson Kipsang and Kenenisa Bekele, but the Kenyan's rivals could not keep up. Kipsang and Bekele, former Berlin champions and all-time greats, were not sold on the torrid pace but it would turn out not to matter, as heavy rains and humidity lingering around 90 percent significantly slowed the projected pace.

With two kilometres to run Kipchoge made his move and Adola had no response, leaving the 2015 victor to pull clear and take another impressive victory - his eighth in nine marathon starts.

With six kilometres to go, Adola threatened to claim a shock win when he made a break, but Kipchoge stayed in his wake, closing the 10-metre gap and regained the lead for the final two kilometres. The rainy and humid weather kept both runners slightly off world record pace.

The 52-year-old Kennedy ran the London Marathon while playing a mandolin.

Gladys Cherono followed up her 2015 victory by winning the women's race in 2:20:23, ahead of Ethiopia's Ruti Aga and fellow Kenyan Valary Ayabei.

In the women's race, Kenya's Gladys Cherono, a victor in Berlin in 2015, proved victorious again in 2:20.23, with Ruti Aga of Ethiopia second in 2:20.41 and Valary Aiyabei of Kenya third in 2:20.53.
