The US central bank is expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its September 19-20 policy meeting, according to a Reuters poll of almost 100 economists, with markets pricing in a 52 percent chance of a rate hike coming at a December meeting.

Fed policymakers have downplayed stubbornly low inflation as the result of temporary factors for months, but the core CPI has not risen above 2.3 percent in six years.

The dollar was also trading in narrow ranges, edging down to 111.50 yen from 111.58 yen the day before.

Spreadbetters expected Britain's FTSE to start unchanged and Germany's DAX and France's CAC to each open down about 0.1 percent. It's not a slam-dunk, as persistently subdued global inflation, despite a pick-up in growth, remains somewhat of an impediment to tightening monetary policy.
