United States flies powerful warplanes amid standoff with North Korea

South Korean President Moon Jae-in presides over the National Security Council at the Presidential Blue House in Seoul

South Korean Defence Minister Song Young-moo told lawmakers on Monday that it is "not proper" to reintroduce USA nuclear weapons. The North launched its latest missile as it protested against tough new United Nations sanctions over its sixth nuclear test on September 3.

The UNSC will hold an emergency meeting on Friday concerning North Korea's latest missile launch over Japan, the council presidency announced. "The US is strangling and suffocating a country and breaking its will".

"We were discussing for a while that we are really in a vicious circle", said Moscow's United Nations ambassador Vassily Nebenzia.

He was referring to an accelerating series of missile tests by North Korea that have defied USA and worldwide warnings to stop.

North Korea staged its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb test earlier this month and in July tested long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching at least parts of the U.S. mainland.

But in recent years, under the threat of attack by an increasingly antagonistic North Korea, Shinzo Abe's government has made a renewed push for change.

Tensions flared when Kim Jong-un's regime tested what it termed a hydrogen bomb many times more powerful than its previous device.

Speaking to CNN on Thursday, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said while he was in charge there would be no nuclear weapons in his country, no matter what the North does.

Last week, North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile that travelled 3,700 kilometres and passed over the Japanese island of Hokkaido before landing in the northern Pacific.

The projectile flew an estimated 2,000 kilometers, including over Japanese prefectures, before falling down into the Pacific Ocean. Military video released overnight shows warplanes dropping live bombs during the joint missions involving American, Japanese, and South Korean forces.

Pyongyang's nuclear program is a major focus right now at the United Nations, where President Donald Trump starts a weeklong series of meetings this morning.

White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said the United States was fast running out of patience for diplomatic solutions on North Korea's missile and nuclear programs.

This weekend United States bombers and fighter jets took part in a new show of force against North Korea. "And we all know that, and none of us want that".

In a Gallup poll conducted on over a thousand adults all across the US last week, 58 percent of respondents said they would support military action against North Korea if diplomatic and economic solutions failed.

"What we are seeing is, they are continuing to be provocative, they are continuing to be reckless and at that point there's not a whole lot the Security Council is going to be able to do from here, when you've cut 90 percent of the trade and 30 percent of the oil", Haley said.
