UN Security Council condemns N Korea over missile launch

The Ethiopian delegation, which is the presidency of the Security Council for September, confirmed in a notice that the US and Japanese delegations to the United Nations "request the Presidency to call urgent consultations".

The UN Security Council condemned "the highly provocative launch of a ballistic missile" by North Korea and expressed commitment to a peaceful, diplomatic and political solution to the crisis.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the DPRK leadership "to cease further testing, comply with the relevant Security Council resolutions, and allow space to explore the resumption of honest dialogue on denuclearisation".

"There has been a discussion of the situation surrounding the Korean Peninsula", the statement reads.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that North Korea's latest missile test violated United Nations Security Council resolutions, the Interfax news agency reported. "We should engage in meaningful negotiations", he told reporters after the consultations. "North Korea continues to pose a threat to global security and stability and must choose to stop isolating itself and stand down its illegal programs".
