President Trump surveys Hurricane Irma damages

Five die in Florida nursing home after Irma knocked out power

The city is trying to explain how one of its nursing homes, The Rehabilitation Center of Hollywood Hills, became a death trap for 8 elderly patients after the facility's power and AC went out during hurricane Irma Sunday night. As of 2016, Florida had about 680 nursing homes.

Which is what reportedly happened in Hollywood Florida.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson called the deaths in Hollywood "an inexcusable tragedy" and demanded a federal investigation. "These kind of facilities should be regulated with a strong, tight rein. and it hasn't happened". A 2012 report from the inspector general of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found the vast majority of nursing homes comply with that requirement, but that serious gaps persisted. The youngest was 70, according to the Broward County Medical Examiner's office. "There will be an investigation here and we will get to the bottom of it".

In related news, firefighters also helped relocate 122 people late Wednesday from two assisted living centers near Orlando that had been without power since Hurricane Irma.

At Thursday's news conference, medical workers from an adjacent hospital who assisted in evacuating the center recounted a scene of chaos and stifling conditions as panicky staff scrambled to move overheated patients into a room where fans were blowing.

"We often see that injuries and deaths after disaster in the United States are more common than those actually caused by the disaster itself", Kirsch said. When asked Thursday whether the recent hurricanes had changed his views on climate change, President Trump said, "we've had bigger storms than this" - contradicting the hyperbolic language he had used to describe Irma days earlier as it neared Florida. Statewide, 64 nursing homes were still waiting for full power Thursday, a number that had dropped almost 20 from the previous day, according to the Florida Health Care Association.

U.S. Southeast utilities said on Thursday they restored power to nearly two-thirds of the 7.8 million homes and businesses knocked out by Hurricane Irma, leaving about 2.8 million of those customers without electricity.

That 2006 case involved a $15.4 million settlement.

Aerial footage showed patients sitting outside in wheelchairs and others being taken out of the facility on stretchers. She said she last heard from her sister two days ago and found out the air conditioning was not working. Patients were treated for dehydration, breathing difficulties and other heat-related ills, authorities said.

"Although the details of these reported deaths are still under investigation, this situation is unfathomable", he said. "You go, you check on them, you make sure they have water and food and that's it", he said.

Josh Levy, the mayor of Hollywood, said he urged mayors and county commissioners across the state to urge residents to check on elderly neighbors in their communities.

So far, Irma has been blamed for the deaths of more than 50 people in the USA and Caribbean.

Residents struggling to put their lives back together have fallen victim to new hazards, including oppressive heat, brush-clearing accidents, house fires and deadly fumes from generators.

Some 2.8 million homes and businesses remained without electricity in Florida and neighboring states on Thursday. By the afternoon, five more had died.

Around 100 people were evacuated from the building since.
