Armed police are this afternoon raiding a house in Surrey hours after arresting the 18-year-old man believed to have planted the Parsons Green bomb.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd indicated that the suspected bomber was male, saying "we will have to make sure to take all steps that we can to ensure the sort of materials that this man was able to collect".

Earlier today police apprehended a suspect in the "port area" of Dover as it was thought he was attempting to flee the country.

The UK's terror threat level was raised to critical - the highest level - late on Friday, meaning another attack is expected imminently.

The raid in Surrey took place at a residential address just before 2pm this afternoon.

"Police would like to thank the local residents directly affected for their cooperation and patience".

"Cordons are being put in place at a 100 metre radius to facilitate the Metropolitan Police Service's operation, which is being supported by colleagues from Surrey Police".

"That work is now complete and they have recovered a number of items during that search". Detectives will also look into the CCTV footage before and after the attack to track movements of those they suspect of involvement.

"All I know is that they have two boys at the moment, both are foreign", Serena Barber, 47, who said she has known the couple all her life and lives in a property which backs onto theirs, told The Sun.

"We didn't know what was going on".

Mojgan Jamali, who is a resident in Cavendish Road, said she was only given "one minute" by police to pack her bags, get her children and leave her home.

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told MailOnline police vehicles swooped on the street as she was making her way to a local Tesco store.

"Police have made good progress but the threat level remains at critical and we urge the public to remain vigilant", she said.

'We tried driving around but they had blocked of part of the road and they said that we really need to go right down [to the other end of the road].

"They told me to leave. It was an absolute shock when the police knocked on the window and gave us five minutes to get out".

Met Police said of the evacuation: "The evacuation is a precautionary measure following the arrest of a man in Dover, Kent, at approximately 07:50hrs this morning in connection with the investigation into the terrorist attack at Parsons Green Underground Station on Friday, 16 September".

The Prime Minister announced the first stage of Operation Temperer would be going into effect, which means armed troops will be sent to key locations including nuclear sites, freeing up armed officers to police the streets.

The arrest came 24 hours after a homemade bomb partially exploded at Parson Green tube station in west London, injuring 29 people.
