Hamas to dissolve government for Palestinian unity

The militant group Hamas has agreed to a series of key conditions with rival movement Fatah led by President Abbas which could signal the end of a 10-year-long feud in Palestine

Hamas has agreed to talks with rival Fatah movement, to dissolve the Gaza administrative committee and hold general elections as a way to implement a deal to end their long-running feud, the group said in a statement on Sunday.

Hamas said in its statement that it agreed to dissolve the administration running Gaza, allow the reconciliation government to carry out its duties in the territory, to hold elections and enter talks with Fatah.

Hamas and Fatah delegations have been in Cairo since Friday to negotiate an agreement proposed by the militant Palestinian faction which has controlled Gaza for a decade.

Numerous attempts since 2011 to reconcile the two movements and form a power-sharing unity government in Gaza and the West Bank have so far failed.

But Hamas has been weakened by years of israeli blockade, and deterioration of its relations with Egypt after removal of former president, islamist egyptian Mohamed Morsi, in 2013. Last blow: ostracized by its arab neighbors of Qatar, main financier of islamist movement in palestine. The UN has even ruled that enclave, one of most densely populated areas in world (2 million inhabitants) would become "unlivable" by 2020. "If this is Hamas statement, then this is a positive sign", he told Reuters.

Hamas says it accepts Abbas's reconciliation demands

Representatives for Abbas, who is in NY ahead of the UN General Assembly this week, could not be reached for comment, nor could Fatah representatives presently in Egypt, which has been hosting talks with Hamas.

Hoping to pressure Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza, Abbas has cut payments to Israel for the electricity it supplies to Gaza.

The Hamas capitulation follows months of repression on the part of the Palestinian Authority, which deprived the Gaza Strip f electric power.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said the talks with Egypt will focus on alleviating the blockade and mending a longstanding rift with rival group Fatah, headed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Those reasons, coupled with an escalating sewage crisis that threatens the health of Gaza Strip residents and has ruined the Strip's beaches is contaminating the strip's beaches, and a crippling unemployment, have all contributed Hamas finally, maybe, crying Uncle.
