Most Americans Oppose DACA Repeal, Support Path to Citizenship for 'Dreamers'

Cal State Chancellor Timothy P. White listens to a speaker at the Cal State Board of Trustees meeting in March

President Trump's decision to wind down the policy known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals-which shields from deportation almost a million "Dreamers", aliens brought to the U.S.as children-has drawn a predictable response. Recipients - called "Dreamers" - are individuals who were brought to the US illegally by their parents when they were children. Calling President Donald Trump's decision to rescind DACA an attack on minorities is not only wrong, it's risky. "Those who are affected by this decision were brought to this country as children and are pursuing an education and making contributions to their communities". If we allow one man to have unilateral authority over the legislating process, we forfeit checks and balances, void the Constitution, and soon enough we find ourselves in an absolute monarchy.

"DACA wasn't just a work permit", Anarely said.

"It's a very narrow window of opportunity", he said, explaining that they needed to contact an immigration attorney right away to secure an appointment in time for the October 5 deadline. "I feel like I'm in the same boat as someone whose grandparents came here". A new analysis by New American Economy shows the "DACA-eligible population earns nearly $19.9 billion in income" every year.

"I wanted him to give us time".

We know from past experience going back to 2010 that it will be a tough fight especially in the Senate to pass some version of DACA.

"The truth is, DACA works", Goldsmith wrote in a college-wide email. Schumer and Pelosi said in a statement that the details on border security needed to be negotiated, that both sides agreed "the wall would not be any part of this agreement" and that Trump said he would pursue the wall later.

House Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday said that deporting hundreds of thousands of young immigrants brought into the country illegally is "not in our nation's interest", as he and President Donald Trump prepared to huddle with top Democrats to try to hash out a legislative fix.

As a plaintiff in the lawsuit, CT wrote that stripping DACA recipients of their ability to work legally will lead to greater unemployment and reduced tax revenue for the state.

The Trump administration announced last week it would begin to unwind the Obama-era program protecting undocumented immigrants who were brought to the USA illegally as children from being deported and allowing them to apply for work authorizations.

FCC's Dream Center was busy all week with anxious students, according to counselors.

El Centro is the Latino cultural center on campus.

Already, 16 states - conservative Texas, Utah, and Kansas among them - have passed state-specific versions of a DREAM Act so that undocumented young people could pay in-state tuition in their home states.

Make no mistake, the cause of the DREAM Act is a benevolent one. "At this point, the administration has your information, if you are doing a renewal, so you might as well get two more years of protection", Mendoza said.

Seton Hall students provided their perspectives about the DACA decision. "It should be the opposite. 'Oh, Stephanie got this in third grade - why didn't you?' But it's a good thing he kept them". Your degree will always be your degree. "The only way we can make this better is through legislation. We've gotten a lot of really great feedback from staff and students as well". Catalina Morales a DACA recipient, college student and ISAIAH organizer came to the U.

The argument is simple: We must repeal DACA in order to refrain from setting a perilous precedent. She doesn't watch the news, she said, and heard about the administration's actions through her sister, who is also a Dreamer. The website www.withdreamers.com lists just six Nevada officials in support of DACA, although there are many more. "This is a place to laugh, cry, scream, whatever they want".

"Un Rinconcito para SoƱadores" dates are September 20 from 1 to 2 p.m.; October 18 from 11 a.m.to noon; November 8 from 10 to 11 a.m. and December 13 from 1 to 2 p.m. "These dreamers are Americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper".

Trump claims a major incentive for his decision to end DACA is to "provide a window of opportunity for Congress to finally act" to create the pressure for effective laws that President Obama could never actualize.

"It's fully lawful, it's totally American in its values and it's an unmitigated success for California's economy and the country's economy", Mr. Becerra said of the DACA law. "I push them and motivate them to stay in school and graduate".
