In a major development, the Telangana state government has decided to make Telugu a compulsory subject from class 1 to class 12 in the southern state.

It was also decided the only educational institutions that teach Telugu as a compulsory subject would be given recognition and permissions to function.
Vice President, M Venkaiah Naidu said I welcome the resolution of Telangana Government for making Telugu a mandatory language from 1st to 12th standards.
Dr P Mashusudhan Reddy, president of Government Junior Lecturers Association responded to the move saying, "Of 9 lakh intermediate students, nearly 75 per cent have taken up Sanskrit". Sahitya Academy will prepare syllabus for the Telugu subject to be taught to primary, secondary and higher and intermediate classes.
