Myanmar's Suu Kyi to address nation next week on Rohingya crisis

The Islamic Movement

Sept.13: Myanmar State Counsellor and de facto leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will not attend next week's United Nations General Assembly debate as criticism of her handling of the Rohingya crisis grows.

The exodus of refugees, sparked by the security forces' fierce response to a series of Rohingya militant attacks, is the most pressing problem Suu Kyi has faced since becoming leader previous year.

Mrs Suu Kyi's fellow Nobel laureates Desmond Tutu and Malala Yousafzai have been among the most high-profile global figures to criticise Mrs Suu Kyi's response to the Rohingya crisis.

Tiran Hassan, Amnesty International's emergencies director, spoke by video from Cox's Bazar in southeastern Bangladesh where the Rohingyas have arrived in what she called "a sea of human misery".

Bangladesh was already home to about 400,000 Rohingya who fled earlier conflict and numerous new refugees are hungry and sick, without shelter or clean water.

Uzbekistan Wednesday called on Myanmar to put an end to the ongoing violence against the Rohingya Muslim population.

"They (Rohingyas) are human beings and they will live as human beings..."

"The danger is without some sort of public proclamation by Security Council members ... the message that you're sending to the Myanmar government is deadly", Tadros told reporters.

Myanmar's military said that Rohingya villagers helped them arrest six suspected Rohingya insurgents armed with swords and slingshots on Monday. "They are not responsible", she said.

The government hospital in Cox's Bazar has been overwhelmed by Rohingya patients, with 80 arriving in the last two weeks suffering gunshot wounds as well as bad infections.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency in the Hungarian capital Budapest, Deputy Prime Minister Recep Akdag said he had asked WHO General Director Tedros Adhanom for their support in facilitating Turkey's plans to set up shelters and camps for Rohingya refugees inside Myanmar and Bangladesh, Anadolu Agency reports.

Violence broke out on August 25, after Rohingya fighters attacked police posts, prompting a military crackdown.

The Rohingya are one of Myanmar's many ethnic minorities in the Buddhist-majority nation. Next to the significant human cost of the conflict, thousands of homes and whole Rohingya villages have been burned down.

Britain and Sweden are seeking a closed-door Security Council meeting to discuss the "deteriorating situation".

The 1.1-million strong Rohingya have suffered years of discrimination in Myanmar, where they were stripped of their citizenship despite having long roots in the country.
