Thousands of Kildare students to receive Junior Cert results this morning

The number of students achieving top marks in the Junior Certificate has fallen this year.

Although foundation-level Junior Certificate exams are now no longer set for weaker students, the proportion taking ordinary-level English fell from 23% to 21%.

Under the new system which only applies to English students results will receive a Distinction, or a Merit, or an Achieved mark instead of the traditional A, B, C, system.

Research done by Behaviour and Attitudes revealed that more parents - from 9pc in 2015 to 15pc this year - now believe it is acceptable for children to drink alcohol at home before the age of 15.

Only four students obtained a grade A or its new equivalent in the Junior Cycle in 12 subjects compared with ten students previous year.
