Apple's new watch will tell you if you're having heart problems

Apple wants to test its new wearable as a cardiac screening device as CEO Tim Cook hints at a larger presence in healthcare

To this end, Apple is partnering with clinicians at Stanford for a study to determine whether the Watch can accurately detect abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias, in wearers. The people requested anonymity as these plans have not yet been made public.

The Apple Watch 3 will have its usual heart rate app, but the app has been updated to monitor measurements including your resting and recovery heart rates, and to notify you if you've got an elevated heart rate when you're not being active.

"Atrial fibrillation is a common rhythm disorder and knowing someone has it is medically useful because those people might need specific treatments", said Bob Wachter, chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco.

Apple Watch has also been used in studies to screen for heart rhythm abnormalities. It's here that the Apple Watch could be a fantastic medical tool.

U.S. lawmakers want 'supercharged' response to N.Korea nuclear tests

"A regular heart rhythm has a familiar pattern, but when your heart beats irregularly it's called arrhythmia", explained Apple exec Jeff Williams.

Apple has already included several appetizing features in previous Watch editions for health and fitness enthusiasts, making it one of the more attractive smartwatches on the market.

"One of the things that we've learned that we've been really surprised and delighted about is this device, because of the monitoring of the heart, has essentially alerted people through the collection of the data that they have a problem", he told Fortune. We're extremely interested in this area. Apple has not yet announced the Australian or United Kingdom prices for the device. Stanford did not return a request for comment.
