Amid Rohingya uproar, Myanmar leader to skip United Nations meeting

US urges Myanmar to give access to Rakhine crisis area

A Bangladesh minister said the government had chose to create a huge new camp on almost 2,000 acres of land near an existing United Nations facility, where new arrivals will be registered and given aid.

The violence in Myanmar started on August 25, when insurgents attacked Myanmar police and paramilitary posts in what they said was an effort to protect minority Rohingya.

The United Nations on Thursday said that almost 164,000 Rohingya have escaped to Bangladesh over the past two weeks in the wake of a massive security sweep and alleged atrocities by the country's security forces and Buddhist mobs against the Rohingya.

Aung San Suu Kyi has called for all of this and has been laying the groundwork to achieve it, but has confronted continuing opposition from her country's military.

Ms Suu Kyi had been expected to participate in discussions at the General Assembly session in NY, which runs from 19 to 25 September.

In her first address to the UN General Assembly as national leader in September previous year, Suu Kyi defended her government's efforts to resolve the crisis over treatment of the Muslim minority. Monks and their followers with full support from Aung San Suu Kyi and her so-called democratic government and the army personnel are killing Rohingya Muslims and burning their homes.

All three attendees, including American Peace Prize victor Jody Williams, who worked with the Canadian government to ban landmines, added their voices Friday to the global condemnation of Suu Kyi. Her moves must be thoughtful and calibrated.

On Friday, Williams, Ebadi and Gbowee and four other female Nobel laureates sent Suu Kyi a letter telling her she had betrayed the values of the Nobel Peace Prize with her silence.

Fear and violence stalks Rakhine state as communities turn on each other and villages continue to be set alight.

He said the crisis in Myanmar is a political issue and should not be reduced to a religious conflict between Muslims and Buddhists, although he said religious prejudice may have been involved. So far, thousands of Rohingya Muslims including women and children have been killed.

Protests have popped around the world over the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar.

Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and then spent a year as clerk to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. The senator, like others on the committee, pointed to Barrett's writings and speeches which focused on religion and law.

The monks are a powerful political force in Myanmar, given their influence on the population, and Ms Suu Kyi clearly feels she needs them on her side.

Why has Aung San Suu Kyi refused to speak up for Rohingya?

The spokesman said President Htin Kyaw is in hospital so the second vice president will attend.

About 1.1 million Rohingya were living in impoverished state before the latest outbreak of violence but they are not considered one of 135 official ethnic groups.

To shed light on the real reasons of the recent violence against Rohingys Muslims, Tehran Times newspaper reached out to Bangkok-based geopolitical researcher Anthony Cartalucci. A meeting of Rakhine's local ruling party, Arakan National Party (ANP), and the Tatmadaw's commander-in-chief immediately followed, where the former reiterated its demand for boosted security measures.

She does not control the military.

During that discussion, she brushed aside criticism over her role: "I've made it very clear that our work is not to condemn but to achieve reconciliation".

Various reports - by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch etc - point to the Rohingya undergoing gross human rights violations at the hands of Myanmar's armed forces in the name of counter-insurgency operations.

There were at least a million members of the Rohingya ethnic group living in Myanmar, a lot of them Muslim, though some are Hindu. Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship in 1982 as part of decades-long persecution that has denied them basic rights, including freedom of movement.

More than 150,000 Rohingya people have poured into Bangladesh in that time.
