Colchester, Vt - Green Mountain Power will be sending more than 30 lineworkers, supervisors, and mechanics to Georgia to help in the Hurrican Irma recovery efforts which wiped out power to millions and left historic damage to many parts of the southeast.
Georgia Power turned back on electricity for more than almost 300,000 households and businesses between early Tuesday morning and the afternoon.
As of 10:59 a.m. Tuesday, 2,405 out of Georgia Power's 86,325 customers in Muscogee County don't have electricity, according to the company's website.
In a statement, a representative of Georgia Power wrote, "While the company is working around the clock, customers should plan ahead for the potential for extended outages, possibly days or weeks, due to the vast damage from the storm". The highest number of outages Monday in Muscogee was 26,207.
According to the press release, EMCs began preparations for Hurricane Irma more than a week ago and have participated in daily discussions with co-ops from across the country to arrange for extra crews, trucks and equipment.
Georgia Power says that it could days - or even weeks - for electricity to return to some areas of the state. That's down from a combined 2 million outages at the height of the storm.
"Every region in the state has been affected and it's going to take time for us to get back to normal in terms of power restoration", Georgia Power CEO Paul Bowers said in a news conference Tuesday. Georgia EMC utilities brought in 3,000 crew members from 13 states to help out.
