Hurricane Irma keeps SC on edge

Charleston braces for 'serious flooding' from Hurricane Irma

- About 6.2 million electric customers were without power in Florida late Monday, according to FEMA chief Brock Long has said some places won't have electricity for weeks. That evacuation took effect at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Even with Irma's weakening, the tropical depression is still expected to bring heavy rainfall across a widespread area, as it flooded parts of coastal Georgia and SC, including Savannah and Charleston, on Monday.

A flash flood emergency has been declared in Charleston as widespread flooding driven by Tropical Storm Irma engulfs the city.

Meanwhile, Charleston's downtown streets were experiencing "incredible flooding", according to the NWS.

Just before 1 p.m. the flooding exceeded levels seen during Hurricane Matthew a year ago, meteorologist Christopher Dolce said.

- Irma continues to weaken as it moves over northern Florida, the National Hurricane Center said.

SCE&G reported scattered power outages across the Lowcountry as of 10 a.m., with most - more than 5,000 - in Charleston County.

Additionally, four deaths were reported in the U.S. Virgin Islands, three deaths were reported in Puerto Rico, five deaths were reported in Florida and one death was reported in SC.

Currently, the outer bands of Irma are striking SC, particularly in the Lowcountry where a tornado watch has been issued there until 2 p.m. "It's not too late to leave now".

The storm left tens of thousands in the state without power.

Authorities said Monday there have been no reports of deaths in SC from storms related to Tropical Storm Irma.

"Things are looking better for North Carolina, but we're not out of the woods yet", Cooper said in a statement Sunday. These sites are all located just off major interstates, and all accept pets.

"It seems counter-intuitive because the storm, you know, is way over to our west", Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg said at Sunday's news conference.

The National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg reported sustained winds of at least 40 miles per hour or wind gusts of 58 miles per hour or stronger could occur.

There is still the potential for severe weather across all of North Carolina, says meteorologist Christopher Dolce. The strong and powerful storm winds lead people to the power outage. As a result, state officials are stressing residents should not travel to Charleston at this time.

- More than 17,000 customers have already lost power in Savannah, Georgia. North Carolina transportation officials are working with their counterparts in Georgia and SC to coordinate evacuation traffic.
