Facebook tests Instant Video downloading over Wi-Fi to save your data

Facebook Removes Instant Articles From Messenger

"Instant Videos" are being tested with a small percentage of people using its Android application, the social media giant was quoted as saying by TechCrunch on Tuesday.

There is no surprise that Facebook strongly wants to get the hold of the video market which as of now is dominated by Youtube.

In addition, having videos download in the background might make users more prone to watching videos on Facebook due to the fact that they aren't using their mobile data.

Facebook Instant Articles feature already loads much faster than mobile websites to prevent users dropping off waiting for a publisher's articles to appear. Such videos will be marked with a lightning icon. It's not clear how Facebook determines which videos to pre-download or how long the videos stay downloaded to a user's smartphone. The feature was first spotted by The Next Web'sMatt Navarra.

Facebook has been ramping up to compete with its rivals and in a recent development, the company has reportedly agreed to shell out a whopping $1 billion to become a major hub for videos. Instant Videos is undergoing testing with a limited number of users at the moment ahead of a possible wider rollout.
