Black is back: Hokies, WVU renew Black Diamond Trophy rivalry

Virginia Tech Media Day Football

West Virginia was getting set to graduate Skyler Howard after a breakout season and the Mountaineers would have to replace him with someone just as effective to even approach 10 wins again.

Virginia Tech is a four-point favorite in the neutral-site game (Landover, Md.), but let's go with the Mountaineers in the upset. Virginia Tech returns one of the ACC's top defenses this season.

Dana Holgorsen made one of the biggest moves last offseason when he landed Florida-transfer quarterback Will Grier. In his first game in a Mountaineer uniform Grier will show signs of taking the offense to the next level. Grier is West Virginia's leader in the offensive huddle, so in order for the Mountaineers to retain the Black Diamond Trophy, he's going to have to shake any rust he may have early.

KC: Make it three for three here with Grier being the pick. He'll grind it out and find a way to take the game into the fourth quarter.

Rain delays Italian Grand Prix qualifying
Lance Stroll was forced into a defensive drive in the closing stages of the Italian Grand Prix after a mistake the teenager called "devastating".

"I have a lot of great memories of some big football games, some important football games". But the Hokies defense could be a difference maker in this match-up. Based on history alone, it's nearly a forgone conclusion that this renewal of the Black Diamond Trophy Game will be a close and down to the wire game.

Virginia Tech will be led by redshirt freshman Josh Jackson, who is the first freshman Hokie signal caller to start the season in 10 years.

That last game, played in Morgantown in 2005, resulted in a 34-17 Virginia Tech victory - West Virginia's lone blemish on the way to an 11-1 season and a Sugar Bowl victory over SEC champion Georgia.
