The blue dogs of Mumbai: industrial waste blamed for colourful canines

Mumbai's blue dogs: Pollution board shuts down dye industry after HT report

After pictures of blue dogs and birds were published by local activists and reported in the Indian and global press, an investigation from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) found that a chemical manufacturer of dye and colorants was responsible for releasing the dye into the water and air.

A group of roughly eleven blue dogs were spotted around August 11th in Mumbai, causing some locals to react. "We have spotted nearly five such dogs here and have asked the pollution control board to act against such industries".

But according to the group, while shutting down Ducol Organics might stop animals from turning blue, the broader problem remained unresolved.

Consequently, the MPCB discovered the company in question was not only releasing chemicals into the river, but also into the air surrounding the factory.

The buyback offer failed to impress institutional investors, who own almost 58 per cent of Infosys stock. The TV channel quoted a source as saying that Nilekani's role would be "cleared" in the next 48 hours.

A local pollution control board was called in to investigate after locals reported that local dogs in the area were suddenly turning light blue. "We can not let such an industry function", Anil Mohekar, who is on the government board, said. We can not let such an industry function. The blue dye was water soluble, and Chauhan updated the Protection Cell's Facebook page to say most of the dogs had been cleaned by rain, but admonished officials that the temporary closure of one factory was not a long-term solution to the region's pollution woes.

The Guardian reports that an animal welfare agency managed to catch one of the dogs and wash off the blue dye.

The Kasadi river, surrounded by hundreds of factories, is notoriously toxic, containing an astonishing 13 times the contamination level considered "safe". Kasadi runs through Taloja, Mumbai's dense industrial zone home to almost 1,000 factories.
