US, South Korea set for war games as North plans missile launch

President Donald Trump delivers his first speech to Congress

News breaks that Otto Warmbier, a U.S. student who was being held in North Korea, died after his release.

With its latest threat, North Korea is suggesting it could launch four missiles which could potentially overwhelm the THAAD missile defense system and strike near Guam.

Along with the USA personnel on the island, there are about 7,100 of their family members as well as 6,700 civilian Defense Department workers and their dependents, according to Logan.

About 160,000 people live on the island, which extends about 12 miles (19.31 kilometers) at its widest. While there has been some resistance and displeasure from the people of Guam over the USA military's presence, it is also essential to the island's economy, second only to tourism in importance.

"I'm glad you're holding the helm, Sir", he said. "The U.S. came here because I think they wanted the land and they helped us out with the Japanese, because I think they wanted the land".

The possibility of a nuclear confrontation is considered remote but worldwide alarm has been escalating in recent days.

North Korea's military is "examining the operational plan" to strike areas around Guam with medium-to-long-range strategic ballistic missiles, state-run news agency KCNA said early Wednesday, August 9, 2017 local time.

But the Guam Daily Post said in an editorial that although the island's residents were used to North Korea's threats, the situation was more precarious today because "a feisty, not-so-cool-headed commander-in-chief lives in the White House now". However, Guamanians are still not allowed to vote in the USA presidential election. Andersen Air Force Base hosts a Navy helicopter squadron and Air Force bombers that rotate to Guam from the USA mainland.

A statue of Guam hero Ricardo Bordallo is pictured at the entrance of the Governor's Complex on the island of Guam, a U.S. Pacific Territory, August 10, 2017.

In response to North Korean missile tests, the United States military has tested its missile defense system in May, and multiple times in July, although they later admitted one had failed. Today, Naval Base Guam is the home port for four nuclear-powered fast attack submarines and two submarine tenders.

United States stocks tumble on North Korea worries
In commodities, Crude failed to hold the 50 per barrel level, falling almost 2% topping at $50.22 earlier in the session. Gold futures for December delivery hit their highest level since June, rising $3.90 to settle at $1,294 per ounce.

He saw North Korea's statement as a warning to Washington that its missiles could reach targets in the region, rather than one of an actual attack.

Guam was claimed by Spain in 1565 and became a USA territory in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. "One might even call him a hawk", Mr. Kishida said on a television debate program on Thursday, adding, "I'm a liberal, a dove". Guam stayed under naval rule until 1950, when the Organic Act made Guam a self-governing territory of the USA and its residents became US citizens. USA allies Japan and South Korea quickly vowed a strong reaction if the North were to follow through.

The U.S. keeps a Naval base and Coast Guard station in the south, and an Air Force base in the north that saw heavy use during the Vietnam War.

But there's also some resentment about not being able to vote in the general election for USA president. Japan seized it for about 2½ years during World War II. A huge red, white and blue ribbon is outside the airport terminal.

About 40 percent of Guam's residents are Chamorros, the name for the native people.

The official languages of Guam are English and Chamorro, which means 'noble.' It's a Malayo-Polynesian language that has incorporated Spanish words over time. "And not a lot of Americans know that".

Japan's ability to destroy North Korean missiles in its airspace as they are ascending has been called into question.

Locals here remember 2013, when North Korea threatened the Andersen Air Force Base, which hosts the U.S. Pacific Command's bomber fleet. The air base was built in 1944, when the US was preparing to send bombers to Japan during World War II. The plan would be sent to leader Kim Jong Un for approval just before or as the U.S.

Japan, anxious its ballistic missile defenses could be overwhelmed by swarm attacks or circumvented by warheads launched on lofted trajectories, is likely to acquire a ground-based version of the Aegis missile defense system.
