President Trump Says He Won't 'Rule Out' Military Option In Venezuela

President Trump

"Trump tells reporters at his New Jersey golf course Friday that he's "not going to rule out" a military option".

Venezuela's new Constituent Assembly on Saturday strongly backed socialist President Nicolas Maduro in the face of the "vile threats" of his United States counterpart Donald Trump, who said United States military action was an option to quell the South American country's devastating crisis.

But the Pentagon said it had received no orders on military action on Venezuela. We have troops all over the world, in places that are very, very far away. "Venezuela is not far away", Trump said, referring to the close proximity of the country in Latin America.

Trump told reporters that the people of Venezuela are suffering and dying and that there are several options on the table for Venezuela which include possible military intervention if necessary.

Padrino added that Venezuela will release an official response soon.

Pence was expected to meet with the four countries' leaders, deliver a major speech on US-Latin American relations, tour the newly expanded Panama Canal and discuss the situation in Venezuela.

Washington has slapped sanctions on President Nicolas Maduro and some of his allies, and branded him a "dictator" over his attempts to crush his country's opposition. But it said Maduro had "refused to heed this call" and instead had chosen the "path of dictatorship".

Trump declined to give more details about the possibility of USA forces leading an operation in Venezuela.

The unexpected warning shocked many Venezuelans. "Mr. Lopez and Mr. Ledezma are political prisoners being held illegally by the regime", Trump said in a statement earlier this month, referencing Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma, two of Maduro's top political opponents.

Some experts say that Trump's aggressive comments could work in Maduro's favor, helping the leader to boost his standing as Venezuela's defender.

President Nicolas Maduro's new constituent assembly has been widely criticised as anti-democratic.

Although Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves, its economy has collapsed in recent years as the country led first by the late Hugo Chávez and then by his successor, Maduro, has resorted to increasingly authoritarian measures to consolidate power.
