Oakland Raiders Running Back Marshawn Lynch Sits During National Anthem In Arizona

Raiders rookie defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes impresses Derek Carr

Marshawn Lynch didn't play Saturday night, but he did make a statement in his return to an National Football League game field.

Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch sat during the national anthem before Saturday night's preseason game between the Raiders and Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio addressed Lynch's decision to sit following his team's 20-10 loss to the Cardinals, adding he was unaware of Lynch's plans before the game.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick remains a free agent after notably sitting during the national anthem last season. But I'm going to respect you as a man, you do your thing.

Whether you agree with the protesting that's been done by NFL players across the league or you don't, Lynch taking a seat during the national anthem is a note-worthy matter.

Lynch's comments specifically referred to Kaepernick's protest as "the start" of something - an odd phrasing, if Lynch himself had been doing the same thing for a decade. "It's not a form of anything other than me being myself, '" Del Rio said, via ESPN. "We'll do ours.' It's a non-issue for me".

Lynch's locker was cleared by the time the media was permitted in the postgame locker room Saturday night, per multiple reporters. Lynch voiced support for Kaepernick while speaking to talk-show host Conan O'Brien previous year, and Saturday's sit-down came right after racially-motivated protests and violence recently took place in Charlottesville, Va.
