Nationals' Bryce Harper Leaves Game With Apparent Knee Injury

The play occurred in the top of the first inning against the San Francisco Giants on a groundball to first base.

According to the Washington Post's Jorge Castillo, Harper hurt his knee when he lunged for first base trying to beat out a ground ball.

The Nationals and Giants game spent about three hours in a rain delay prior to the game after having Friday's game rained out.

After writhing in pain on the ground for a couple of minutes, Harper was helped off the field with assistance from trainer Paul Lessard and hitting coach Rick Schu.

They have be stronger and the squad needs freshening up, which has started to happen and I think will continue to happen. Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESPN FC, the BT Sport pundit said: "The mentality has got to improve".

Harper was replaced by Andrew Stevenson, who took over in center field with Brian Goodwin moving to right.

He is among the National League's leaders in batting average, home runs and RBIs this season. He is the anchor of the Nationals' lineup and has led them to a 68-45 mark, best in the NL East. He played in 105 of Washington's first 113 games.

Harper is under contract through next season and can be a free agent in the winter of 2018.
