Jharkhand forest officials gun down elephant that allegedly killed 15 people

Shoot-to-kill: India hunts serial killer elephant

India's top hunter told on Saturday how he felled a rogue elephant which had killed 15 people in a series of attacks since March. The hunters had tried to tranquilize and capture the animal for a week, but after many unsuccessful attempts, officials gave the team permission to kill the elephant. The rocky terrain and thick vegetation and visibility of just 15 feet of Sahibganj district made it impossible for capturing the elephant.

After their unsuccessful mission, the Jharkhand government with a team of forest officials chose to shoot the elephant before it killed any more people.

"Despite all the efforts by the forest department and our teams working 24-7, we had no option but to order the shooting of the animal", he added.

Some 1,100 people were killed for the past three years by roaming tigers or rampaging elephants in India, according to data released by the Environment Ministry earlier this month.

The elephant, believed to be 20-25 years old, have killed 11 people in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand since March and four others in the neighboring state of Bihar, said Singh.

The area is inhabited by the Paharia tribe, one of the poorest indigenous tribal communities.

US, South Korea set for war games as North plans missile launch
A statue of Guam hero Ricardo Bordallo is pictured at the entrance of the Governor's Complex on the island of Guam , a U.S. Andersen Air Force Base hosts a Navy helicopter squadron and Air Force bombers that rotate to Guam from the USA mainland.

Of the 11 deaths in the state, nine of the victims were Paharias, Singh said.

"He is one of the best out there". "It was quite a hard operation because of the thick bushes, and since the animal had turned rogue it charged at us before I pulled the trigger".

At least 100 people, including forest officials and villagers took part in the hunt, but Mr Khan said he was the only person authorised to shoot.

The elephant's death comes a day before World Elephant Day, which falls every year on August 12.

Violent encounters between elephants and humans were an "increasing trend", said Singh, as vast swathes of forest are cleared for human settlements and industry.
