Iran parliament ratifies legislation to counter USA anti-Iran moves

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani speaks in a campaign rally for May 19 presidential election in Tehran Iran. Iranians head to the polls Friday to vote in the Islamic Republic's presidential election

A total of 240 parliamentarians out of 244 present voted for the bill.

Lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the outlines of the bill to "counter America's terrorist and adventurist actions" as some chanted "Death to America", the state broadcaster IRIB reported.

Iran's lawmakers have overwhelmingly approved a motion in response to recent U.S. sanctions, voting to boost spending on Tehran's missile program and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Head of the Federation Council's worldwide affairs committee Konstantin Kosachev says the decision to increase financing of the missile program, adopted by the Iranian parliament, is a logical response to the US tougher sanctions.

Iran's parliament on Sunday approved more than half a billion dollars in funding for the country's missile programme and foreign operations of the elite Revolutionary Guards in response to U.S. sanctions.

Iran denies violating the United Nations resolution which endorsed the Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal, preventing them from conducting activities related to ballistic missiles created to deliver nuclear weapons.

The bill mandates the government to allocate an additional US$260 million for the "development of the missile programme" and the same amount to the Revolutionary Guards's foreign operations wing, the Quds Force, state news agency IRNA said.

'The bill has very wisely tried not to violate the JCPOA and also give no chance to the other party to manipulate it, ' Araqchi said.

Araqchi said the government of President Hassan Rohani will support the bill.

The United States has had no diplomatic ties with the Iran since 1980, and Trump has halted the direct contacts initiated by his predecessor Barack Obama.

The plan would require Iran's government and armed forces to draw up a strategy to counter USA violations of human rights around the world, and to support Iranian bodies and individuals affected by U.S. sanctions.
