China still building islands in disputed waters: think-tank

Chinese military lodges stern representations to Japan over latter's Defence White Paper

China expressed "strong dissatisfaction" Friday, after a US warship sailed near an artificial island in the strategic South China Sea.

The USS John S. McCain destroyer sailed within six nautical miles of Mischief Reef - an artificial island built by China - on Thursday in the third "freedom of navigation" operation of the Trump administration so far, a US official is quoted as saying.

For the Pentagon and the American security establishment, China stands at a critical stage where it could translate its massive economic might into modern military technology and political muscle in a matter of years, rather than decades.

It comes amid soaring tensions on the Korean Peninsula over Kim Jong-un's missile programme, and as the United Nations is urging China to increase pressure on North Korea.

He added that the Chinese Navy identified the warship, warned and expelled it.

"This clearly shows who does not want a stable South China Sea and who is the major force driving the militarization in these waters", the ministry spokesperson said. The U.S. and North Korea have been exchanging threats over North Korea's missile program.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement that the USS John S. McCain had violated Chinese and global law, undermined Chinese sovereignty and security, and endangered the safety of frontline personnel.

China has indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and their adjacent waters, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang reiterated on Thursday.

Trump Says He's Considering Military Response to Venezuela
Trump made the comments in a tweet early Friday from a working vacation at his golf course in New Jersey. He has been accused of setting up a powerful constitutional assembly to push aside opposition.

"The US destroyer's actions have violated Chinese and worldwide laws, as well as severely harmed China's sovereignty and security", it said. Both the Navy and the missile forces were expected to get the bulk of China's annual defense budget, which a year ago amounted to $152 billion, second only to that of the U.S.

Nicole Schwegman, spokeswoman for the US Pacific Fleet, said US military forces operate in the Asia Pacific region on a daily basis.

A dispute over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea continues to boil between the two Asian giants.

In July 2016, The Hague's Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that China has no rights for territorial claims in the region.

China, which claims virtually the entire South China Sea, routinely protests such operations. "Hindi naman nila sinabi na ititigil ang pag-i-improve sa pag-reclaim tulad ng Subi Reef Mischief Reef at isa pa, we will leave it at that, hindi naman natin sila mautusan na tigilan nila", Lorenzana said.

More significantly, the latest U.S. naval patrol comes days after a meeting of China and ASEAN foreign ministers in the Philippines had agreed a framework for a code of conduct in the South China Sea which is contested by multiple claimants including China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and the Philippines.

China has deployed underwater drones -torpedo-shaped vehicles - called Haiyi, or sea wings in Mandarin- in the strategic South China Sea waterway for scientific purposes where they will remain underwater for a month, according to reports.
