Arsenal beat Leicester City 4-3 in Premier League opener

Reuters Toby Melville

Handsome header from Olivier Giroud ensured the Gunners beat Leicester City in a thrilling start to the 2017-18 Premier League season.

Wenger revealed after Friday's win that Giroud, who has scored 97 goals in 231 appearances since joining from Montpellier in 2012, could have left the Gunners this summer.

Lacazette almost had his second of the night just minutes later, but Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel turned the shot aside, but Giroud beat the Dane with an exquisite header on the ensuing corner to give Arsenal the 4-3 victory.

The Foxes then went on to take the lead when Jamie Vardy notched his first of the night from a pin point cross from Marc Albrighton, but Wenger's side leveled the game when Danny Welbeck found the net at the stroke of half-time.

But it was not to be.

But then Arsenal's super-subs came to the rescue: Aaron Ramsey drew the scores on 83 minutes, before Giroud's sublime header gave the Gunners all three points.

"I prefer to be on the pitch", the 30-year-old Giroud said, "but as much as I can I try to help the team reach its target". In the end he made a decision to stay and it was one of the great days of recent weeks for me. I know how important he is not only as a player but also in the group he has a big weight.

"He doesn't want to leave and I'm happy he wants to stay". "It's a determined no".

"We went for a win and we deservedly earned it".

"We kept going and the spirit of the team was absolutely outstanding", Wenger said.

"I feel as well that the goals we conceded, we can work together to get rid of that because one was a ball we lost in the build-up and we conceded two goals on corners".

"For us it was a bit disappointing with the goals that we've let in and we shouldn't really be conceding in that way, but I think we showed great determination and great togetherness to get back into the game and we won it towards the end of the game". I'm disappointed with the handball in the build up, but once the corner's given you have to defend it better.
