Slow-moving Typhoon Noru makes landfall in western Japan

At one point the world's strongest storm this year, Noru's approach to the Japanese heartland prompted evacuation advisories for tens of thousands on Shikoku, Japan's smallest main island, and more than 400 flights were canceled according to reports from NHK, the Japanese Radio a Japanese TV and Radio broadcaster.

Typhoon Noru, the fifth typhoon of the season, made landfall in northern Wakayama Prefecture at about 3:30 p.m. on August 7, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The Amami island chain, located just south of the southwest main island of Kyushu and some 1,350 km (840 miles) from Tokyo, will be hit by high winds and heavy rains from Friday.

Two people were killed by the storm as of Sunday, one a man knocked down by heavy winds and the other a fisherman who went missing after going out to check on his boat.

The typhoon is expected to bring rainfall of 600 mm in the southern part of Kyushu and Shikoku island during the 24-hour period until 6 a.m. on August 7, 500 mm in northern Kyushu, 200 mm in the Kinki region centering on Osaka and 150 mm in the Tokai region around Nagoya.

It had a central atmospheric pressure of 975 hectopascals and a maximum wind speed of 162 kph near its center.

Authorities were warning of flooding, mudslides, high waves and swollen rivers in the southern part of Kyushu island and on the Amami Oshima region.

Evacuation advisories were issued for parts of Shikoku and Kyushu, including the city of Asakura and the village of Toho in Fukuoka Prefecture, which were hit hard by floods caused by downpours in early July.
