A café in Melbourne has caused a social media storm after charging men an 18% tax and giving women priority seating.

The 18 percent markup reflects the gender pay gap reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistic in 2016.

This means that women earn only 82 per cent as much as men on average, and would need to work an extra 65 days per year to make as much as men.

According to Seven News, the 18 per cent premium runs for just one week a month and is completely optional, though no one has refused to pay so far.

"We've had men travel across town to visit us and pay "the man tax" and throw some extra in the donation jar - guys, you're pretty neat", the Facebook post read.

On the 9NEWS Chatroom this afternoon, Adelaide presenter Brenton Ragless said he would be "happy to pay".
