Business calls for vote on same-sex marriage

Any move to hold a postal vote on same-sex marriage is likely to be challenged in the High Court

"The plebiscite was the commitment they made and they should stick to it, and that's what the Liberal Party think", he said.

The Senate blocked the Turnbull government's election promise of a national plebiscite on same sex marriage in October past year.

Senior ministers, however, reportedly now have a detailed proposal for a postal plebiscite to give voters a say. But marriage equality groups confirmed they have lodged High Court proceedings to block a postal vote.

One of its leaders, Senator Dean Smith, released a draft Bill on Sunday which many hoped might be supported by his party and would lead to a free vote in parliament.

Anyway, the long and short of it is that marriage equality is no closer than it was yesterday.

"If it moves us as we were always supposed to towards a free vote, which was the whole position we took to the election - it wasn't just a plebiscite, it was a plebiscite with a free vote - then I'm very open to it", he said.

"A lot of people talk to me about marriage equality and I think across the business community, like the broader community, there's a lot of people who think the time has come and they would certainly like to see our politicians simply vote on the issue", Ms Willmott said.

"I intend to continue to support a compulsory attendance national plebiscite as the fairest way to resolve the issue".

Cormann confirmed the plebiscite enabling legislation will be introduced again to the Senate this week.

The government would not introduce this bill under their current policy, but Smith can introduce it on his own as a private member's bill.

"That's a respectable minority view inside the Coalition party room".

A proposal for a postal vote, which has been advocated by immigration minister Peter Dutton, is expected to be debated by cabinet, with the logic being that it's the next best option because it would not require legislation to support it and the Senate has blocked the national plebiscite route.

The Equality Campaign's executive director, Tiernan Brady, said people should not lose sight that this was a debate about real Australians.
