What's next for McConnell, GOP senators after the latest health care failure?

President Donald Trump railed against Senate rules requiring 60 votes to overcome a filibuster in a series of tweets Saturday morning, just a day after the chamber dealt a devastating setback to the GOP effort to repeal and replace Obamacare.

We'd like to believe that three failed GOP attempts to dump tens of millions of Americans off their health care insurance in order to fund a massive tax break for the nation's wealthy might finally lead to a bipartisan Congress - one that would roll up its collective sleeves to help the country's middle class.

Pete Souza, the former White House photographer for Barack Obama, took a not-so-subtle dig at President Donald Trump after the Senate failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act. For now, there are no other short-term bills the Senate can consider on health care.

"I hope our Senate colleagues, our House colleagues on his side of the aisle, turn a deaf ear to that", Schumer said. He continued, "His tweet last night said, 'We're going to let the system collapse; we're going to hurt innocent people because we are angry we lost politically'". If he were to vote yes, Vice President Mike Pence would have cast the tie-breaking vote to advance the bill back to the House. McConnell's careful maneuvering, and the promise that the coolly received "skinny" bill would be reworked in House conference, didn't sway McCain or fellow GOP Sens.

Conservative Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., running for a Senate seat, faulted McConnell for not crafting a plan that could pass.

Republicans have long denounced Obamacare - which expanded Medicaid and created online marketplaces for individuals to obtain coverage - as an intrusion by government on people's healthcare decisions.

And shortly after that, Trump posted: "If the Senate Democrats ever got the chance, they would switch to a 51 majority vote in first minute".

McCain arrived on the Senate floor just after midnight, when debate on the "skinny" bill ended.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price said in a statement that the Trump administration would pursue its health care goals through regulation.

In his own statement, McCain said the failure of the GOP plan "presents the Senate with an opportunity to start fresh". In May, Trump called for the election of "more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%". Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), will make it hard for McConnell to pave a new path forward.

Trump has also complained that three Republican senators voted with Democrats to block the way.

"Unfortunately", Ryan said, "the Senate was unable to reach a consensus".

It took two strong and logical women, Sens.

He said the impasse offers hope "that officials in Washington will work in a bi-partisan fashion to address current challenges with the Affordable Care Act, and to advance policies created to improve our health care delivery system in ways that protect patients and recognize the vital role of health care providers in the care delivery system and in our economy".
