Trumps Obamacare repeal efforts foiled in US Senate

US Senate shoots down Bill repealing Obamacare

After several attempts to get rid of Obamacare, the final blow for the GOP came when three Republicans sided with Democrats - Senator John McCain, who just underwent surgery for brain cancer, returned to work giving the GOP's latest attempt a thumbs down.

However, the surprising part is that even some members of the Grand Old Party, like John McCain, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, also voted against the bill, immediately attracting criticism from Donald Trump. But Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said after the bill failed on early Friday that he would move to other legislative business in the upcoming week.

He claimed the current checks and balances are making the Republicans "look like fools" and called on the party's Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, to scrap the "outdated" rule.

President Trump was clearly disappointed with the outcome.

Republican U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar used Twitter to comment on the upset, writing that "the House kept its promise, but the Senate let down American families".

"The speakers statement that the House would be willing to go to conference does not ease my concern that this shell of a bill could be taken up and passed at any time", McCain said.

"The problem with the latter approach is that it will be very obvious what they are doing and they will be held responsible when people lose insurance and rates sky-rocket".

Among the ideas that Meadows is reportedly working with Senate Republicans on are amendments by Sen. Senators voted 51-49 to reject the "skinny repeal" of the ACA, also known as Obamacare.

It would have resulted in some 16 million people losing their health insurance by 2026, with insurance premiums jumping by 20 per cent, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

Friday morning, just before 2 a.m. ET, he delivered the fateful vote in the other direction.

During his presidential run against Hillary Clinton, Trump faced flak over his behavior and comments towards women.

"The greatness of our country is not measured by the well-being of the powerful but how we have cared for the 'least of these, '" Dewane said. Seven years later, they aimed to repeal it outside the typical committee process without a single public hearing or Democratic vote.

"I said from the beginning, 'Let Obamacare implode and then do it.' I turned out to be right", Trump said Friday.

"Senate Republicans and Republicans in Congress in general overwhelmingly support repeal of Obamacare, there's a handful of senators who are now on record not being for that, but they're all going to suffer the consequences of this failure", said Brendan Steinhauser, a Texas-based conservative operative with extensive grassroots experience.

Republicans are zero for five thus far on presenting health care plans that would actually improve the issues that Americans are now experiencing under the Affordable Care Act: increasing premiums and, in some counties, a collapsing marketplace.

"And he asked us to go back to regular order, to bring back the Senate that some of us who were here for a while remember".
