Schumer Praises GOP Sens For Killing 'Skinny Repeal'

McCain, along with Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, who opposed the bill from the beginning, ultimately dealt a major blow to not only the GOP's attempts to repeal Obamacare but to President Trump's agenda more broadly. John McCain's vote killed Senate Republicans' effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

"First, you know last night was an wonderful moment and the credit goes to a lot of people, but at the top of the list are the three who showed wonderful courage to resist the pressure and do what's good for the country", Schumer said.

Two holdout GOP Senators - Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) - voted No on skinny repeal, but this still meant that the bill could pass, with VP Mike Pence casting the tie-breaking vote.

In a statement released early this morning, Johnson said he was "disappointed not only in the failure to pass legislation to begin to fix the damage done by Obamacare, but also in the dysfunctional process that directly led to this result".

On Saturday, he tweeted: "Republicans in the Senate will NEVER win if they don't go to a 51 vote majority NOW".

They laughed as McCain said that the reporters in the balcony could probably read his lips.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, though clearly pleased with the outcome of the vote early Friday morning, insisted it was "not a time for celebration, it's a time for relief".

The Senate's Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer of NY, said such a step will make healthcare even more expensive.

In his own statement, McCain said the failure of the GOP plan "presents the Senate with an opportunity to start fresh". Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wanted to move on the measure Friday, but it was delayed after an objection from Sen.

On Thursday, several Republican senators, including John McCain and Lindsey Graham, made clear in a press conference that they were concerned about passing skinny repeal because they did not want it to become law.

It would also extend a moratorium on the tax on medical-device makers through 2020 and increases the amount that individuals can contribute to health-savings accounts.

President Donald Trump has again threatened to end required payments to insurance companies unless lawmakers repeal and replace the Obama-era healthcare law.

"Skinny repeal fell short because it fell short of our promise to repeal & replace Obamacare w/ meaningful reform", McCain said later on Twitter.

While the Senate has invoked the so-called "nuclear option" in the past to get certain nominations - most recently of note Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch - through the chamber by a simple majority vote, there is now no method for doing so with legislation.
