Israel, Jordan: Pressure Mounts Over Temple Mount

Israel, Jordan: Pressure Mounts Over Temple Mount

"For Saturday, this is a high turnout, but al-Aqsa needs the support of all Muslims", Nabil Dumeiri, a resident of occupied East Jerusalem, told Al Jazeera.

Chaotic scenes unfolded as Israeli police used stun grenades to try to control crowds charging forward when the last gate Muslims use to enter Al Aqsa was opened after a stand-off lasting several hours.

It comes after Israel installed metal detectors and CCTV cameras outside the mosque, which is one of the most sacred Islamic sites but also stands on the holy site that Jews call Temple Mount.

The Red Crescent said tensions rose when Israeli troops closed one of the gates to the compound as a large crowd of worshippers tried to enter to pray at al Aqsa mosque for the first time in almost two weeks.

"We are making security assessments leading up to Friday prayers".

A tense standoff had been underway between Israel and Muslim worshippers at the holy site despite the removal of metal detectors on Tuesday. After the attack Israel installed metal detectors and other security measures at an entrance to the mosque compound. Some 115 Palestinians were treated for wounds both inside the compound and in the surrounding area, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Almost 500 of the injuries took place in East Jerusalem alone.

A Palestinian also tried to stab soldiers at a junction in the West Bank and was shot dead by Israeli forces, the army said.

Differences over the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif go to the core of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the complex is a flashpoint for violence.

Only men 50 and older were allowed into the mosque compound, while younger Palestinians prayed in nearby streets.

Clashes broke out between Muslim worshippers and Israeli security forces in the Old City of Jerusalem on Thursday as the Muslim community resumed prayers inside the al-Aqsa compound.

"She was in danger of being trampled by large crowds ..." The Egyptian Al Jazeera office shut down in 2013. Seemed going ok then sound of stun grenades.

Foreign ministers from Islamic countries will meet in Istanbul on August 1 to discuss the situation at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.

Israeli forces also cracked down on a rally that was staged in solidarity with the holy site near the checkpoint after Friday noon prayers, firing tear gas at the worshipers.

But facing global criticism and pressure, Israel's security Cabinet decided late Monday to remove the metal detectors. Many of them wore caps that said: "I am a Muslim". "It is like a bright day in the gloomy skies of the Arab world".

For the past two weeks, most Muslims have refused to enter, instead praying in the streets around the Old City. Now, Israel's sovereignty over the Old City of Jerusalem will be challenged with violence.

"Since the crisis, Israeli police have barred people in three ways from the city", Abu Asab said. Some 21 were transferred to hospitals in Jerusalem, it added.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said President Mahmoud Abbas rejected U.S. pressures on the mosque compound.

"This is not the first time".

"Israel has been aggressively oppressing the Palestinian people for years", Zimmermann told Anadolu Agency in a recent interview. The Prisoners Club alleged a number of them were beaten by police.
