England has a firm grip on the third Test

England paceman Toby Roland-Jones was understandably elated after a stunning start to his Test career saw him run through South Africa's top order at The Oval on Friday.

Yet his performance was, if anything, eclipsed by the tour de force on debut of Middlesex's late bloomer Roland-Jones.

Johnson took six for 33 against Zimbabwe at Chester-le-Street in 2003.

Bavuma was 34 not out and Morne Morkel unbeaten on 2, with the four-match series in the balance at 1-1 and the continued overcast conditions again favouring the faster bowlers. They collapsed to 61 for seven before recovering to 126 for eight at stumps to give themselves a chance of passing the follow-on target today - especially if absent all-rounder Vernon Philander is back from an overnight stay in hospital on a drip, as he tries to recover from his mystery stomach upset.

Live coverage of the third Test between England and South Africa - in association with Sky Ocean Rescue - continues on Sky Sports Cricket and across our digital platforms.

Earlier, Temba Bavuma's gutsy 52 helped South Africa avoid the follow-on.

He then produced an even better cover-driven four off James Anderson, with England's record Test wicket-taker hit on the up. Roland-Jones had Kuhn trapped in front early in the third session and Amla followed when he tickled the paceman behind.

It left England with a lead of 178.

South Africa's Chris Morris reacts after bowling as England's Joe Root adds runs on the fourth day of the third test match between England and South Africa at The Oval cricket ground in London, Sunday, July 30, 2017. Cook is rarely bowled at this level but can be vulnerable against Morkel.

Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, then had South Africa captain Faf du Plessis lbw for one playing no shot. Five years on, however, it was a different story as Amla exited for just six, when he could do nothing other than glove a lifting Roland-Jones ball to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

South Africa are now 227 runs adrift after allrounder Ben Stokes's century against an attack without the ill Vernon Philander propelled England to 353 in their first innings.

Westley, a longstanding team-mate of Cook at county side Essex, twice drove Philander for four and cover-drove Morkel for another boundary.

But his review of umpire Joel Wilson's decision showed the ball had pitched just outside the leg stump.
