Charlie Gard's situation calls for more discussions on end-of-life care

Parents of baby with rare disease inspired by Charlie Guard fight to get more treatment

Yesterday Mr Justice Francis, the High Court judge asked to decide his fate, said a deal must be agreed by midday today or GOSH's advice would be followed.

The judge, Mr Justice Francis gave the parents until Thursday to find a team that could support Charlie for the days they are looking to spend with him at a hospice.

A British court granted the parents of terminally ill infant Charlie Gard more time to discuss an end-of-life hospice care plan with doctors, after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on Wednesday.

Charlie Gard's parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard read a statement at the High Court after a hearing on their baby's future, in London, Britain July 24, 2017.

Great Ormond Street Hospital said it was not practical to provide life-support treatment for days at the couple's home.

Ms Yates walked out of Wednesday's hearing in tears after the judge set the timetable.

"I hope you are happy with yourselves", Yates said as she left the courtroom.

Charges filed against Obduila Sanchez in connection with fatal crash
Although she too was injured in the wreck, Seja said she really is "affected" by social media, adding "that's what life is now". Her defense attorney has requested all the information on the case, including medical records and the 911 call made by Sanchez.

His parents have since been trying to find an intensive care doctor to oversee a plan that would allow Charlie to be ventilated in a hospice for several days so that they could bid farewell to their son, whose birthday falls on August 4.

He said he might give the parents until 12pm tomorrow to try to reach an agreement, but said there must be a "default position" if they can not agree. His condition was discovered in October, and he was admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

But the hospital said a paediatric intensive care unit specialist would be required to care for the child at a hospice over a longer period. Every day, parents with a seriously ill child in intensive care units, emergency rooms and other pediatric care facilities make heart-rending decisions to withdraw life-sustaining technology.

Armstrong said Charlie's parents regarded that as only "a notch better" than the hospital.

Connie Yates and Chris Gard wanted to initially bring their child to their home.

Barrister Grant Armstrong, who leads Charlie's parents' legal team, indicated that the couple wanted to privately fund treatment at a hospice where Charlie would stay for a number of days before life-support treatment was ended.

"We are now in July and our poor boy has been left to just lie in hospital for months without any treatment whilst lengthy court battles have been fought", the parents' said.

The decision concludes a bitter five-month legal fight from Ms Yates and Mr Gard, whose appeal to give their son treatment was previously rejected by the European Court of Human Rights. The parents abandoned their bid for the experimental treatment on Monday, saying that time had run out for Charlie.
